Get Involved!

You can make a difference—and have a bit of fun at the same time. Most important is simply being aware and making the choice to purchase Fair Trade whenever possible.

Remember that, ultimately, we all live in this world together. In the end, if some fall, then we all fall—but when we raise up one, we raise up all. The children pictured to the right are smiling because they now have hope for the future because of Fair Trade. So, when you go shopping, take note of the products with the Fairtrade label. No, don't buy them only because they're Fair Trade, but because they're good quality. When they fail to meet standards, then pass them up. Fair Trade is not a handout. It's a hand up. Be part of a system that benefits everyone.

When you're in a shop that you frequent, consider asking the proprietor to stock Fair Trade items. If there's a specific Fair Trade item that you can recommend, it's even better. It only takes a moment, and it helps improve your own daily experience. Instead of simply going in, picking something, paying for it, and then walking out, you can enjoy a personal exchange with another human being—and do something positive for other people at the same time. It's a win-win situation!

We need help of all sorts, so if you've an interest, we're sure you can find a place with us.

Have you ever considered volunteering? It isn't necessary to make an ongoing commitment. Perhaps you have one Saturday free? Then you could spend a couple of hours in our Fair Trade booth at the Farmer's Market.

If you're a shop owner who carries Fair Trade products, then you could take photos of them and be featured on our upcoming Buy Fair Trade section of the website.

Do you have any ideas? We're always interested in suggestions.

Let us know you're interested, and we'll gladly find a way to help you get involved. Just click here to send us a note.

Rennicks Doxilly has raised bananas for more than 32 years. He is currently also employed by St. Lucia's Ministry of Agriculture supervising a demonstration plot for the Banana Emergency Recovery Unit. The farming duties are shared with his wife.

Mr. Doxilly says, "'Fairtrade makes a lot of difference. I get $7 more on a box of bananas and I have personally gained funding to fix up my shed. More widely, it helps with community aids like helping the Dennery hospital and schools in my community. I'm hoping my daughter can now go to college."
